This page discloses the systematically accumulated information about the range of voluntary motion of the joints, maximum strength, and functional power of the human body acquired in “Collecting basic dynamical characteristics data for aged persons” and “Development of measurement method for basic dynamical characteristics,” which the Life and Welfare Technology Center executes as a job related to measurement of human characteristics.

 |
Human basic characteristics data for body size, physical fitness, range of voluntary motion of the joints, passive counteraction of joints, maximum strength, and the functional power of the upper limbs are disclosed (about 1000 examinees: as of 2003 April. Target is 20 - 80s.). Statistical values such as average or standard deviation can be outputted with these data. The original data can also be downloaded.

In the workplace or general daily life, the development and prevalence of products for aged members of society and environmental adaptations have not improved, while the size of the aging population is increasing and employment of the elderly is predicted to accelerate. One of the reasons for the delay is that the physical characteristics of the elderly, necessary information for the design of products and adaptation of the environment, are not objectively and quantitatively understood, and there are no well-designed databases in which the data are organized. The purpose of this program was to develop a measurement method for acquiring standardized data, systematically organize data regarding the physical characteristics of the elderly, standardize an accessible database, and make that data available for the design of products and adaptations to the environment. |

A rapidly aging society increases concern over the manufacturing of products and the adaptation of the environment from the users’ standpoint to lead a safe and high-quality life. The organization of human characteristics data is an important issue. This program aims to establish a measurement technique from a technical point of view through the exchange of opinions based on technical knowledge about measuring human characteristics and the cutting edge of technical information.
